In the world’s mythology, serpents are represented as potent guardians of temples and sacred spaces. This connection may be grounded in the observation that when threatened, some snakes frequently hold and defend their ground, first resorting to threatening display and then fighting, rather than retreat. Thus, as natural guardians of treasures or sacred sites, the serpent would be signaling the inviolability of the site.

There is a crucial role of the snakes as a marker of boundaries and a guardian of liminal spaces in Turkish mythology too. According to the Middle East people’s belief, Sun God sends its might or flames to the earth coiling, bending just like the snakes. These are light, heat, goodness, wellness, mercy and abundance.

Legends say that every home has its own guardian soul. These good souls present themselves to the household mostly in the appearance of snakes. They live with the family and protect them. They should be respected if not it will be a bad sign inviting harm and diseases. One would not disturb snakes as they are the protector of good luck and prosperity.
